How the Climate Affects Your Piano
Wood and felt components inside a piano absorb and release moisture with the surrounding air, and inconsistent humidity over a long storage period can cause swelling, cracking, or warping that’s difficult to reverse.
Extreme or fluctuating temperatures affect tuning stability even in storage, since the same string tension and soundboard responses that make a piano go out of tune during normal use are still at work whether or not the piano is being played.
A piano coming out of storage often needs tuning to resettle at proper concert pitch (A440-442), the same recommendation given for a piano that’s just been moved — the environmental change itself is often enough to shift a piano out of tune, even with climate control in place.
